Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

No wonder these precious flowers grow here, the sun shines directly on that spot.! I didn't know this is their name either.I think I might have cropped the photo a bit at the left, where the darkness isn't really a necessary part of this photo.I imagine they are very very small, but their beauty is just magnificent.
