This is a mill in Pella, Iowa. This is just the very top, they have turned it into a museum which you can tour. Pella is a little Dutch town and in the Spring they have a Tulip Festival which brings thousands to the area.
Carol...I envy you and all of the wonderful places you visit and photograph in Iowa. This is a fantastic image. I like the dark vignetting although I have my typical comment about lopping off parts of trees and buildings. I wish you could have taken a few steps back and caught the entire fan of the windmill. Other than that, this is terrific.
Dorothy Michaels: No, just Dorothy. Alan's always Alan, Tom's always Tom and John's always John. I have a name too. It's Dorothy, capital D-O-R-O-T-H-Y.
Bob is right with his above comment (☺): Like almost Dutch traditional windmills, this one has a name too: 'Vermeer' (called after the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Built in 2002 however in Pella, Iowa, USA, by de Dutch mill constructor Verbij. It's a replica of a 1850-style Dutch 'stellingmolen' (windmill built on a brick foundation with a kind of octagonal balcony on which the mill can be controlled). The mill is fully functioning: the 'Vermeer' mill grinds wheat into flour using only wind power and is the tallest working windmill in the United States. Its height is 41 meters (134.51 feet)
