The title refers to the lighting technique used for this still life. Using a flashlight and a long exposure time I "painted" the flowers with light by constantly moving the flashlight around. the background was lit by a single light bulb. Shot in raw file format so I could color correct in post production.

Your kinda handy with the technique. I would say it worked very well and actually does have a slight paint look to it. Interesting and unique Chip...look forward to seeing some more. Inspirational;-)

Chip, I find this image drop--dead gorgeous!!!!!! I like the way you described the technique that you used (like I could do that.....hehe). The flowers have a bit of a 'glow' around their edges which to me is what gives them the painted look. When you said you did a 'color correct', do you mean that you added the background or did you have to 'up' the color of the flowers? I am curious. This became my new desktop immediately and I also filed it into my favorites folder on my harddrive for future drooling....er....viewing. lol Many thanks for this beauty. :~)

wow, they look really painted. this is amazing, i've tried stuff like this, but they never turned out because i always had a much different temperature backlight, than the flashlight i used, and i could never paint my subject evenly enough. i like all the grain in the background, it really adds

I love the dimensionality achieved with this technique. It's a new one to me and something definitely to play around with. Great image and saved to my personal flower collection, thanks!

Fantastic final result .. must be seen FULL SIZE

I did this same concept, only different .. back in the 80's

In a darkened room, I scrambled my TV picture (dialed in HBO, disconnected my cable box, and messed with Horizontal and Vertical Stablization) .. so now I have dancing colors on my TV ..

then I placed a mirrored surface underneath the TV screen (propped up to provide a flat plane at the screen edge) .. then I scrounged the house for trinkets .. like a brass unicorn, cologne bottles and various glass objects .. and arranged a couple of these in front of the screen at a time and shot with a timed exposure of a second or two

When using the Brass Unicorn .. I 'painted' the object with a regular flashlight while exposing the film .. since this was back in the eighties I did NO color correcting but the color was desired since it gave the unicorn a warm golden glow .. and the swirling TV colors just happened to look like lightning (LUCK)

NOTE .. be careful scrambling your TV .. my number is unlisted for this reason ... LOL .. you could probably do the same thing on your computer using an appropriate screen saver .. or like WINAMP and the Geiss or Milkdrop plugins
