I guess people get used to not being part of a larger community... or maybe, flip side, being part of a larger community. I think the starkness of the black and white suits this scene... pairs of people absorbed in themselves and not "seeing" the others around them. I might have chopped the slightly blurred people in motion on the left, but I see that that would not have allowed you to show the two young men sitting at the table well. Good "slice of life" capture.

my eye is drawn to the couple on the opposite side of the fountain. lots going on so there's much to see. good black and white tones. ahhhhh new york.
