These birds are called Piping Plovers and are endangered here with some beaches being closed during breeding season.

Have seen these along Lake Michigan or at least some time of Plover. Excellent vantage point.

I love the muted tones of your beach shots and the interesting composition...it's been a really long time since I've seen any Plovers. Good shot!

Tom, according to the information of this link, there are more than 66 species of plovers. We have (beach) plovers on our beaches as well, but I don't know whether they are similar to the by you depicted ones.

I saw the link Cornelius , I did not know that there were that many species of Plover. I may stand corrected as they seem difficult to tell apart in many circumstances but we do have signs on the local beaches warning not to walk in certain areas of the shore during breeding season for the piping plover..Thank You.
