Early morning at a local lake. Any suggestions on making this look better are welcome...I'm just learning photoshop(on my own), so I'm not a pro with it. I need to go find a good instruction book!

A very good comp, I'd say all you need to do with this is staighten the horizon and maybe a touch of brightness, very minor tweaks. I love the mist rising off the water. This is my favorite time of day.

Hey...As you have probably found out, i'm not much of a commenter. >_>

...but...since you're learning photoshop on your own, i'll give you a few things that i mainly use:

1) Layer masks...if you go to Window --> Layers; the layer window will pop up (if it wasn't already). At the bottom of that window, there are a few buttons. The 4th button to the right looks like a circle that is half white half black....this is the button i'll be referring to in just a moment...

2) If you click on the button a bunch of random things show up that will create layer masks for you. Say you open an image and you:

a) Select the "Curves" button. You can edit basically how dark/bright the different tones in the image are. You can also modify color using the curves mask. Making a gentle "S" curve will increase the contrast in the photo; for example.

b) The "Levels" button. Lets you basically change the dynamic range of the photo. Press the "ALT" button on your keyboard while moving the slider on the right around to see if you're clipping any highlights.

c) Hue/Saturation. I usually bump up the saturation a bit.

d) Gradient Map and Channel Mixer. Use those for B&W (mainly).

3) In all these layer mask things, you can modify them later on. You can also use the paint brush (on black) to paint a layer mask; this basically erases it in certain areas.

...i didn't proof read this whole thing, so umm...i'm pretty sure i've confused you.

I just had a go, what will make a difference i saw is to adjust the gamma to get it more bright, then ad more hue to get a warmer glow.
After that, just to improve the shot a little, remove the fence in the water on the right, and clone out the garbage can on the left, and that would be it !

Good work.

Haha. Awesome pic! I seem to have a fatal attraction to foggy/misty lakes. XD Two things: 1.) The horizon is slightly tilted to the left. 2.) Little bit of fence in the corner is a bit distracting...
9.9/10. :D
