This photo is painfully out of focus. I found it really difficult to focus for this (or most) night shots. I am using a tripod, but was using a wide aperture. Would it help to use a smaller aperture like f/20 (and consequently a longer shutter speed?) I am also interested to hear your thoughts about composition if you can get over the lack of focus. Thanks.

You've definitely got the right direction nailed down. I'd use a smaller aperture (which will also give you a greater DOF). You didn't mention using a cable release? That's pretty much a must-have for night photography. Bre sure to get one long enough to make a loop in it which will help to not transmit shake to the camera.

And, most importantly, don't give up!!!
