Last summer I sat in the egret rookery two hours a day for a month. I have been sitting in the rookery since February 15 of this year studying these fascinating birds and am getting to know their courtship habits, their mating habits, their nest building skills and the care they take of their babies. When I win the lottery I want to write a book about them. Truly, I am not kidding. These two are courting. See how they're looking into each other's eyes. They do a lot of neck touching and bobbing and knee bending. They are starting their nest; I watched them glue down the first stick with egret spit (bet you didn't know that's how they hold down that first stick) and now they are enjoying each other's company before the real task of laying eggs and raising the young begins.

The shape does look like a heart. There must be a lot of static electricity the way their feathers are standing on end. I believe you have fallen in love with the beauty of the Egrets. I can see why.
Good post Colleen.

My dear friend...you are in a class of its own! You have been able to see these beautiful birds in person, and watch them, study them and share them with all of us. These photos of yours should be in the Audobon magazine. They should be framed and hung into art galleries. I mean it, they are wonderful. You should be ever so proud of these photos. Thank you so very much. I shall cherish them all. I have a folder just for them. I would love to frame one and hang it in a special spot in my home. Maybe some day I will do that.
Thank you again for your wonderful photography. Verena
