more from my trip...they went a little over board with the cairns on some trails in arches these piles of rocks are created to mark the trail. a lot of times (especially where we were) the trail just followed a rock slab or other natural paths (like dry stream beds) branch off from the trail so they put these cairns to show where the trail goes.

I have seen this sort of rock arrangement at Buddhist temples. What significance do these have, if any? Good dof in the image.
