Alix,
I like the idea and the composition, but I think the flash puts too much focus on the sunflower leaf and less on the idea of the sun coming through in such a creative way. It would have been ok to leave the sunflower as a silhouette - sometimes mystery is the best touch you can give to your photos =)

Great idea but with a little work this kind of image could be wonderful without washing out the image. Next time try to take the picture with the sun setting behind the flower instead of next to it. Keep up the hard work, you're doing great.

Interesting. The sky is a little strange, the way it changes so abruptly from white to various colors.

Hey Alix,

Just caught your image here while looking through the galleries.

First, congratulations on getting your camera.

Now then, your photo ...

Reading the above, you already have received a couple of good good tips and some advice. Nothing wrong with being creative and adding your own take on a scene or photographic idea.

Reading your accompanying narrative, I thought of some other stuff to add ...

I am sure that your camera has some option available with regards to Exposure Compensation. Check your camera's manual to locate that functionality.

The thought, or idea is ... to take a few shots of the same scene, with adjustments made ... typically, -2EV, 0EV or +2EV as examples. And don't worry about the terms. You will understand them once you find the relevant information in your manual.

In essence, you are underexposing, and overexposing. Such that, once you get back home and can have a look ... you can then make a choice as to which works better. Annnnnd ...

Since I am unaware of what image editing programs you may have access to ... going to suggest a free one. Photofiltre.

Good program/software and widely used on the site here by many members. You can adjust contrast, colour and so forth. So ...

Good composition. I like how you placed the sunflower such that it enters from the left hand side into the frame.

And yeah, a tad overexposed. No biggie though, you will learn through experimentation.

Right, might as well give you both barrels ... for your consideration ... Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition

With alllll of the above tips and advice in mind (not that much really) ... keep shooting and happy shooting. :o)
