Wild roses are in bloom everywhere on those thorny little bushes~the air sure does smell sweet in the woods! Here's some info on a true wild rose. Wild roses are single flowers that always have 5 petals. The thorns are slightly curved and rather thin. The oval fruits or hips are red. This rose is a good wildlife shelter and has been used for erosion control. Catbirds, mockingbirds, yellow warbler and cardinals make their home in these patches. White-tailed deer, robins, ruffled grouse and pheasants all feed on these flowers. It can be invasive and spreads rapidly. Today in the US, the “wild rose” competes with the violet as our most popular state flower; both are the symbols of several states.
