Okay this is all about learning, right. Now that I see the finished work I just don't know. I could say "great job", and move on, but that wouldn't be honest feedback. This one doesn't feel quite right either. In the rule of thirds this should work, but still something is missing. Maybe to move him right, maybe not that much, and keep most or all of the front wave. When I'm cropping like that it's all about feel. I just move them around till it feels right. And I don't know the final outcome till I try many positions. You're a good sport.
I think you did very well on the rework. I like this one too.
I still think a little more brightness and contrast would make it even better, but that´s just me.

I'd also agree that you should leave some space in front of the surfer. However, this is a very nice action shot. The timing is terrific, and you couldn't have posed the surfer any better than this.
