This was a perfectly good Abbey for 400 years until it was turned into a ruin during a royal spat with the Pope by king Henry VIII in 1538. This act of vindictive royal vandalism became known as the "dissolution of the monastries", a grand term to cover what was the wholesale destruction of early Christian architecture in England. Set in a secluded valley are the ruins of the 12th century Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. Enjoy.

This is a beautiful post. A lovely glimpse of early architecture mixed with beautiful autumn colours under a most imposing sky. I love it!

Barry I really like the filter you used on these beautiful ruins. It really brought out the colors in the trees to. I would like to see the original photo and welcome to caedes. It is a really cool place to hang out.

I love the colours in this. The sky, with those orange/red leaves, they grey castle and then that green, green grass. It looks amazing!
