Captured this close-up in low light so the image may be a little grainy due to the higher ISO. But in order to get as clear shot as possible hand held I needed a higher shutter speed. The rule being shutter speed should match focal length and above...hence 300mm a shutter of 1/300 or more. The F-stop being around F8. Also with close ups camera shake is real prevalent hand held.

As a suggestion, Frank.. on the note of grain, and here I can't recall if you have Photoshop or not?

The Spatter filter.

Can work wonders.

Used the Lasso Tool to create a selection of the dragonfly and plant.. Copied into another Layer on top.

Applied the Spatter filter to the Layer below with the following settings used: Spray Radius 15 .. Smoothness 1

A lil' cleanup with the Eraser Tool (Soft Brush) on this Layer in and around the edges of the dragonfly and plant.. and done.

All told.. a couple of minutes.. spend a little more time (on both; the Selection and playing around with the Spatter filter settings) and you can refine the results. As I just noticed some 'Spatter' residual spray at the outside of the right-hand wing.

That said..

You got some very nice detail on the eyes and elsewhere. And for a handheld shot (not trying to be dismissive here of your efforts)?

Well done.

And, but of course.. thanks for sharing this one with us.

Very good one for the Wednesday B&W challenge, Frank.
I've read Les his constructive comment and has check-out his link.
The improvement is significant. I would give it a try, my friend for an even better result than you've achieved already.
Thanks for this fine entry!

Good challenge entry my friend, I really like the details you have here. That would have been difficult shooting conditions, so kudos from me. I did follow the link from Les, and that is some difference I must say. But you still did good! tigs=^..^=

Great details on the dragonfly in this macro Frank.
I like how it is so delicately poised atop the plant.
Added with pleasure to the BWC - thank you :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
