The largest European heron. It can stand with neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunch down with its neck bent over its chest. In flight it holds its neck retracted and has large rounded wings. It is usually solitary although several birds may feed fairly close together. It stalks its food, often standing motionless for some considerable time. It usually feeds close to the bank or shore, but may wade out into shallow water. Canon 7D Sigma 150-500mm @400mm ISO 800 .. Ex 1/20th Sec f/8.0. After being threatened with a Shotgun,I thought I'd better add the info..

Very nice combination the 7D and this big Sigma. Saw one photographer this week using a prime 500 Sigma I think f4,5.. loved that quality too seeing his photos. Good photo! Mich
