This is the old city hall and firehouse in Pauls Valley. They have both moved on to better homes in town but in my opinion nothing nearly as pretty as this old building.
I decided to try something new, Billy, and start at the top of my comments list and work from newer to older postings.
This is a perfect shot for ShiftN, the free download that straightens those pesky leaning buildings. The building on the far right appears to be leaning left and the light pole on the left appears to be leaning right.
An unreinforced brick building in California is a major no-no. During the San Simeon earthquake a few years ago, my adobe brick house sustained about $35K worth of damage. There were two fatalities in Paso Robes (10 miles north of here) when a building like this collapsed. I think the lawsuit is still pending. When someone wants a brick building around here, they use concrete with a textured finish which is painted brick red.
It's a beauty of a building, Billy. The fire trucks could probably knock down the plywood. Sorry to see such a beautiful structure in disrepair.
I downloaded your shot and viewed it at 200 scale. A couple of things caught my eye for what it's worth. There's an aquamarine color border on the far left and far right of the brick building. Also the focus looks just a tad soft.
Your shot made me think of Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys. They now hold their dances at the Johnny Mack Brown High School. They used to hold it at the volunteer fire hall until it burned down. I just love shots of small town America. This is a great addition to your gallery.
The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
In Europe, you find things like a "new" building and discover the new one is 300-400 years old...just happens to be newer than a nearby structure. We just don't get that in the states. Tom
Billy - A fine capture of this old building. Try as we might, building new ones to look old just don't come out with the same feel that the subtle wearing of old brick and stone give to these oldies. I hope it finds a purposeful new use and lives on, as it is part of the fabric of the community. Thad
