Another image of "Another Place" by Antony Gormley, an art work consisting of 100 6ft 2in cast iron statues of a naked man all facing out to sea and spread over 3 km of beach at the mouth of The River Mersey.

One effect of this piece is on the emotions felt by each viewer. I visited Crosby Beach on a windy, cloudy day. The beach was quite empty and the statues portrayed a feeling of loneliness and a longing for something better on the horizon. To others they see the statues as fun creations. There is a man who often visits and gives them hair, made of wet sand, each in a different style. People come and dress them up in old clothes to add a touch of variety and fun. Last year they were an integral part of a Nativity Play that took place down on the beach. Others, however, see the statues with sadness in their eyes as the 100 men all looking out to sea remind them of loved ones who have left home.

However people see "Another Place" what is clear is that it is a great benefit to the area for many, many reasons.

Another great capture of the Sculptures. My first thought was that it was a bombing range for seagulls. Then I realized that they don't need practice. Very well done with a great narrative.

Great capture of the empty beach and the sculptures...as they all stand there unmoving in the same pose I get the feeling of anticipation as if they are all waiting and watching for something to happen...or perhaps something has already happened and they are immobilized...either way, it certainly does evoke alot of emotion and food for thought...great sculptures and great shot.

It just seems eerie to me. Like a sci-fi movie or something. I bet I would get a totally different feeling, if I saw this in person. It's a place I would not want to miss if I was ever over there. Nice shot.

I am not sure how they would make me feel, but not sure that I would plonk sand hair on them, they seem to me to be a bit too surreal for that. I think it would depend on your own mood when you saw them, as to how you saw them. Great shot and thanks for sharing these. My friend had mentioned them a while back, she called them the mersey men.

I think it I woke up on the beach, I would quit drinking forever. I agree with Jo about the feeling being dependent upon the mood. It does look like they are waiting for the ones that were claimed by the sea. Excellent post Steve.

Waiting for loved ones lost at sea... they do have a lonely, sad feeling about them... although i could definitely get behind dressing them up or giving them caps with feathers in them... For some reason I like them better without the wind turbines... less competition for my eye.

I really like this one Steve.
To me they convey quite a lot of sadness - they do look as though they are longing or waiting for another (better?) place but are stuck where they are.
Perhaps one day it will be known as Gormley Beach. I wonder why he made them all the same - apparently replicas of his own body.

You got some of that emotion in your portrayal Steve. This is what I like about Anthony Gormley, you can't help but interact with his stuff because it grabs an emotion out of you. Love what you've said about the way people dress them up and stuff too. There's always something wonderful about art capturing the popular imagination isn't there? PS I can't help myself pointing out that the horizon's not quite straight. But it's a lovely shot.
