This would have been a very bad place to be standing on the morning of May 18 1980 Most of the 56 people killed never saw it coming when half the mountain slid off into a huge pyroclastic avalanche. I saw it all happen from about three miles away. luckily from a ridge on the other side away from the blast. Its something that one will never forget. I do hope you enjoy this scene of recovery.

A sad story, Paul. I can't imagine being witness to such a horrific event, but I know it's something I would never forget. I like the mood you captured of the mountain ... everyone or everything recovers in their own way ... it just takes time. Wonderful capture.

Looks like some green is growing back on Mt St Helens. The eruption must have been a sight to behold, no wonder you will never forget it Paul.

Paul - The strong will of nature is evident in the emerging vegetation. As catastrophic as the event was, seeing it must have been amazing. A good capture. Thad

hahah ^^ I was ten in 1980, and remember being fascinated at the news of this eruption. Of course then I didnt appreciate the horrors that come along with an eruption like this one. I should imagine that it would have been a heck of a sight to see. Amazing to see how harmless it looks now, although I dont suppose it will ever be treated as such ever again. Very interesting shot.

It must have been something to see Paul. The ever changing earth and you now have a record of it. Good post.

I would not have wanted to be standing in the way of that! I remember watching that explode in my 5th grade class on the tv. I will never forget. I cannot even imagine the terror of being there in person seeing it happen live.
