A black Union soldier in front of a slave auction house in Atlanta after Sherman's victory circa 1864. From the Library of Congress, photographer George N. Barnard. I cleaned it up a little in Photo- Shop. Amazingly, this 140-year- old photo is almost 20 megabytes in TIFF format.

This is a great image on so many levels. Thank you for posting it Tracy. I just watched Malcolm X today for the first time. Our history is a saddening thing. I think that I may keep this one up for a few days and going into my favs.

Tracy &Darryl: don't feel sorry about your past. All civilizations knew these problems. Recall the "Enquiry" ("Inquisition" in french) in Europe in the 15th century and the trade of slaves until the 19th century... :-/

Every country has their historical injustices (and their current ones). One of the most significant freedoms/responsibilities we have is in 'sharing' the evidence.
I think this image is so powerful as it is at once both aesthetically beautiful and conceptually chilling.
Thanks for posting it.

Nice picture, It just looks too modern to be a 140 yr. old photo. Where did they tie their horses to?
