The wheel is 42 feet in diameter and is one of the largest in the world, the 1st largest east of the Mississippi.

Lovely shot...but what a strange contraption. They have to pump the water up to run the wheel...why not just use the power directly to turn the grinding wheels? Very strange mill design indeed.

Yup, it is different, however the water for the mill comes from the Berry College resevoir up on the mountain top near the wheel. Once primed, the force of gravity is strong enough to push the water up the stone column, and over the wheel, causing it to turn. Neat!!

What a lovely place and photo! I've always dreamed of owning a whell like this. I wonder if it's a water wheel or what.I am curious, just the way DIgital Fx is....but I do love this particular photo...verena

That is a huge wheel for a grist mill.There are a few that I have taken photos of but never this big..Well done..
