I tried to catch the flare from the sun as it just came into view from behind this tree. All criticism welcomed.

I think you met your goal of catching the flare beautifully! I really like the way the leaves of the subject tree are backlit in front of the background trees. For me, this is more of an "Art Shot" than a desktop background (because of its shape and the glare in the middle of the screen), and as art I think it is very good!
