An entry for the desolation contest. His clothes seemed quite incongruous, but around the corner a church was handing out food and clothes to the needy. I took this in Poland a few weeks ago.

Chris - There is a mood of sadness in this photo. The man's expression, the worn bench, and dark surroundings, all in B/W, lend to the tone. Very well done! Thad

When I first saw this, I got very sad. Being alone like that is painful and frightening. You captured it well, even tho it does portray sadness. And of course, the b&w brings out all the drama and loneliness even more....Very well done . But the drama and strength in this photo is just fantastic. Thank you so much. Verena

Faved....
There is emotion speaking from this capture...
Loneliness, of course, but also a deeper sense of being lost and over the world....
Amazing capture, and best of luck.

Give sorrow words. The grief that does not speak Whispers the o're-fraught heart, and bids it break.

Aa profound sense of loss and overwhelming sadness in this image. Also a very fine B&W with full tonal range. Good luck in the contest.

Congratulations, Chris, on your first place finish in the "Desolation" contest. When I first viewed "Alone" as a thumbnail it looked intriguing. When I brought it to full size I was taken by the pathos of human emotion you captured, from the odd clothes combination this man is wearing, to the bag of questionable goods by his side, and even to his placement in the photo — on one end of his seat with plenty of empty bench beside him and empty space beside the bench. "Empty" might work as a sub-title and could very well be what this poor soul's life is like. Truly a social message.
