This picture is taken at Sept, 6th, 2006 in the 'Kanaal van Walcheren' near the locks of Veere, The Netherlands. I was invited by a foundation, called SBH, for a sailing tour to Arnemuiden on the occasion of the re-opening of an ancient shipyard there. This shipyard will be, in the near future, the home base for this foundation to reconstruct more ancient Dutch wooden fishing boats. On this picture you can see two of the allready reconstructed boats. It's hard to imagine that in the past fishermen had the courage to sail on 'open seas' with those tiny boats. My late granddad was one of them.

Ja dat is toch niet te geloven dat je met zo'n schip de zee op durft ! maar ja ! je moest wel, anders was er geen brood op de plank. De kerktoren doet het ook mooi in deze foto.

If I’m not mistaken that boat is a Hoogaar, a design that goes back hundreds of years. There must be a revival of sorts happening over there. I have seen other recent photos of that type of design.
The photo is very interesting. The shadows could be a little lighter. I do like the composition and having the boat of centre works well and lends balance to the image. The colour of the water is glorious, it looks very inviting. It’s a worthy post.

Robert, you are right. This type is called 'Hoogaars'. The foundation where I was talking about is called SBH what stands for 'Stichting Behoud Hoogaars' (foundation for preservation/reconstruction of the 'Hoogaars')
