The construction of this townhall steeple in Gothic style in Veere, Zeeland, the Netherlands, was completed in 1477. In 1591 a carillon (first 20, but later 47 bells) was added to the steeple and is playing up till now. Playing the carillon can be done either in an automatic way or by a carillonist. When played automaticly, for instance twice an hour (only on the daily hours), a different tune can be heard every time that the carillon plays. Playing the carillon by a carillonist (concerts with a duration of about 1 hour) take place once a week in the summer and once a fortnight in the winter. The carillon adds a lot to the cosy atmosphere in the little town of Veere.

Do people come and sit near there just to hear the tunes? I know of a place in Florida where they do that. Excellent shot of the handsome old steeple, Mr. C.

---Do people come and sit near there just to hear the tunes?---

Answer to Jimbob's question above: no Jimbob. One of the reasons is that other towns in the vicinity like Middelburg, Flushing, and so on have a medieval carillon as well, so local people might get used to it. Another reason is that the sound of the carillon can be heard all over the tiny town, the more as Veere has a very restrictive policy for cars, so that their sound won't disturb the listeners to the tunes of the carillon. The people who are enjoying Veere's carillon are mostly watersports tourists sitting on one of the many terraces.

Cornelius.

Groet Michel

Cornelius...

You captured the intricate detail exquisitely, and I don't see a drop of noise in that clear blue sky. So this steeple was completed 15 years before Columbus discovered what "America"; so I suspect that we don't have any sort of architecture that old here in town. The McDonald's has been here for 15 years if that counts for anything.

Cornelius - How pleasant for the people of Veere to have hourly melodies from the town hall steeple. I like the photo. This 360-degree panorama shows the beauty of the village: http://www.360cities.net/image/veere-townhall-in-zeeland-holland#0.00,0.00,70.0
