This abbey can be found in the center of Middelburg, Zeeland, the Netherlands. It's partly depicted because of its size. It orginates from the early medieval years. Much of the old city center of Middelburg, including this abbey, was bombed in the early phases of WW II (on May 17th, 1940) by the 'German Luftwaffe', to compel the surrender of the Dutch Army forces in Zeeland. After the war, as much of the old town center was rebuilt and restored along pre-war lines as possible. The medieval abbey is still in use today, as a museum and as the seat of the provincial government.

Hope you'll like this image. Thanks in advance for your comment.

I'm so glad they restored as much of the old building as they could, this is a good example of why they should, it's a beautiful structure, and for me I will take the oldies over the new anytime. Mr. C. your image is shot, and presented so well.

I love old buildings and this is a beauty.
I wish we here in the US restored more old buildings.
Sad to say we have the tendency to destroy and build new.
I realize cost plays a major role in this .. but we are destroying our history. I like the red shutters .
Great shot and information.

I like how the steeple extends into the back framing SEA. A nice touch. Colors, clarity and everything else is typical of your great abilities.
Good health to you and yours.

A beautiful image for sure, Cornelius, and you've got to love those red shutters. War destroys so much. I'm glad they were able to restore it. Reminds me of what was done to Dresden.

Cornelius - How fortunate that the town leaders had the foresight to rebuild / restore the old buildings, maintaining the beautiful character of Middelburg. As you always do, your capture of this abbey is excellent. Thad
