This photograph shows some of the experimental cube houses in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

They were built between 1982 and 1984 to a design by the architect Piet Blom.

There are three floors in the by Blom designed cube houses:

-the so-called street house with the kitchen and living room at the bottom;

-in between the heavenly house with space for study and bedrooms and

-at the top of the booth, a three-sided pyramid with space for a conservatory, a balcony or a modest garden.

The entrance and the stairwell are located in the hexagonal column on which the house rests.

Blom's mastery is not denied among architects, but his creations are controversial. The architecture is generally disapproved in professional circles and his concept of 'living in trees' has not been widely imitated. Nevertheless, the location in Rotterdam is one of the more relaxed and pleasant places in the city, because it underlines the historical importance of the area.

The cube houses also attract many tourists from abroad, where they are traditionally known as a model for the modern architecture of the city, because it's not a high-rise but very progressive.

I can understand the controversy...anything that is different is almost always frowned upon by the supposedly knowledgeable. The structures are from the mind of an artist. The public view can be fickle. It is a matter of the eye of the beholder. I say good for Blom. And good image of modern architecture and information, Cornelius.

Art rarely appeals to everyone. That is what makes it art. It forces you to see, feel, and think individually and not as part of some mindless mob. Personally, I find the Rotterdam Cube Houses creates a level of excitement and wonder. Thanks for posting this picture, Mr C.

Very unusual but attractive designs Cornelius. The architect must have needed some time to convince the city officials to allow this.
