The city of Leuven (Belgium) is in the west part of Europe famous for its Catholic university. In 1975 the university had its 550th anniversary. On this occasion the statue of Fonske (only available in the Dutch and French language) was donated to the city. It's situated on the 'Rector De Somer square'. The full name of Fonske is Fons Sapientiae, Latin for Source of Wisdom.
The statue depicts a student who, reading a book, allows wisdom to flow through his head in the form of water. But this explanation would have been given to the statue later. According to the sculptor Claerhout: "It is a sculpture of someone who, pouring a beer into his cup, studies his behavior." Student organizations disagreed and felt it was a caricature of the drinking student. That is why the statue was officially renamed 'Source of Wisdom'.
Fonske is occasionally dressed by student associations that have something to celebrate.
