This is the view from atop a ridge near Smuggler's Cove in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (California), looking out toward the Laguna Mountains. At the bottom of the ridge is a huge rock covered with ancient pictographs, and a collection of morteros, holes in rock used for grinding grain, made by Indians who lived in the region long ago. The sense of history is overwhemling. Unfortunately, the blue haze over the mountains is caused by weekenders on ATVs who are more or less destroying the desert.
