Here you can see several important aspects of the Tower of London.. In the distance you can see the Lanthorn Tower (Second largest tower), The Lanthorn Tower was constructed between the years 1238 and 1272 during the rein of King Henry III. This tower was mainly used as a "marker" for ships sailing on the Thames river, a lantern was lit and placed each night in the top turret of the tower. This tower was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1774 and later completely demolished and rebuilt in 1851. To the left of the photo you have one of the entrances to the White Tower, at the base of the circular stairwell (which leads up to the Royal Armoury) a small wooden box containing two small skeletons was found during some work on the White Tower during 1674 which is said to be the bones of the “Princes in the Tower. ”. The Princes were the only sons of King Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville. “Supposedly” (One theory) the prince’s uncle Richard of Gloucester, later King Richard III, had them killed to retain his title of King of England. And last but not least off to the right of the photo you can see a corner of a cage. This is the cage of the Ravens of the Tower of London. According to legend, if there were ever to be less then 6 Ravens at the Tower the British Empire would fall. The cages are located between the White Tower and Wakefield Tower. In “MY” opinion ☺ the Beefeaters at the Tower are cheating in making sure that the legend isn’t proven one way or another .. They clip one of the wings of the Ravens to ensure that they never leave the Tower grounds….
