In this shot we again have several points of interest, on the left (rear) side of the photo is known today as Wakefield Tower. This tower has had different names though out the centuries, Hall Tower, in 1360 the “Records of the Kingdom” (city records I guess) were moved from the white tower to “Hall Tower” for a time. This tower was also known as the “Great Hall” this is also where the trial of Anne Boleyn’s took place. Henry the VI was murdered in 1471 during England civil war” War of the Roses”. He was brutally stabbed while he prayed. (What a way to go..) This tower housed the Crown Jewels from 1879-1967. To the (rear) right of the photo you can see a set of buildings called the Queens House. These sets of buildings were built during the reign of Henry the VIII. It is believed that King Henry built these buildings for Anne Boleyn; she stayed there before her coronation and then again during her imprisonment. The Queen’s House is now the resident of the Resident Governor of the Tower of London. In the foreground you can see two objects, one in the shape of a fountain and the other a marble / granite “block”. The block is believed to be the spot where the gallows was situated. It was here were “Special” political prisoners were beheaded regular prisoners were beheaded on Tower Hill which the public would be able to view. The prisoners beheaded within the walls of the Tower were: William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings (1431 - 1483); Anne Boleyn, Queen of England (1507- 1536); Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury (1473-1541); Catherine Howard, Queen of England (1524 - 1542); Jane Boleyn, Viscountess Rochford (1505 - 1542); Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England (1537–1554); Robert Devereux 2nd Earl of Essex (1566 - 1601). The fountain type structure is a memorial dedicated September 4th 2006. This memorial was dedicated to the prisoners that were beheaded on this spot…. And of course you have the Tower Bridge at the top left hand corner….. Sorry for all the people walking around in this shot I tried to crop this photo several ways but I didn’t like any of the angles …. Enjoy and thanks for your thoughts, comments and tips.

Beheading sounds so cruel. Hard to believe the public would turn out to watch. Great shot and information Jelly.

It has always seemed a little odd when a very modern structure is used to interpret historical places, like the fountain shape in this photo. I know it's because of the need to visually separate the old from the new, but it's still hard to get used to. Here in ND, missing buildings at historic sites, like forts, are indicated by a 3D steel outline of the building, trying make a subtle statement but not quite succeeding. Interesting photo Jelly, with equally interesting narrative. And the people don't bother me at all... I expect them to be there.
