The next several pictures (if I remember correctly) were taken on the Basement level of the White Tower. I really don't need to explain to much in this picture .. I'm sure you all know what this "instrument" was used for .. What I enjoyed about this display was that on the description on the bottom of the picture they put that this Axe is a Replication of the actual axe that was used .. :) If you take a look at the sketch in the rear of the photo you will see the executioner holding up the head ... I always thought that was done to show the "audience" the head ... but ... according to what I read it was done to show the "HEAD" yes the head of the person just be-headed the crowd .. it seems that it actually takes 8 to 10 seconds after the person is beheaded for them to die .. the brain has enough oxygen to last a couple of seconds before it dies of suffocation. One more detail about the sketch ... the scene is actually located outside of the Tower of London .. that is Tower Hill .. where all the public executions took place. Sorry for the gruesome details ... :)

After seeing the Rack, I had to go into your gallery to see more. I love this shot as well. From what I've heard, there are actually stories of the heads lying on the stage still trying to talk and that often, the head wasn't taken in one swing. Sometime the executioner had to take as many as three swings to full take the head off. (Don't ask me where I learned this. I read a lot of history) I hope you keep going with this series!

You've seen advertisements for cage match fighting, right? And Russell Crowe in "Gladiator?" There isn't a lot of difference between the public entertainment you're illustrating for us here, Jelly, and what was thousands of years ago and what is now on our TV screens. Seeing your photo reminds me that we as a species have not progressed very far. The human taste for sickening entertainment is the only explanation for the popularity of six (count 'em, six) "Saw" movies. A nice slice of history, Jellybean. I just hope that public executions don't come back in style.
