Unguided 30 sec exposure of Messier 51 and its companion galaxy, NGC5195. This was taken last August, but I just now got a round to processing the raw image. Next summer's goal is to use this as the subject for my first color digital astrophoto, next summer. The image is approximately 12 X 9 minutes of arc. It took light about 37 million years to reach us from this deep space object. Hope you enjoy the B&W image.

2008/12/08- Note:
Unguided means that I made no off-axis corrections during exposure. The telescope drive is a sort of clockwork mechanism that moves the scope along the equatorial plane at the same rate the earth turns. For longer exposures, it is often necessary to manually input minor corrections to avoid producing egg-shaped stars.

Don, fascinating picture. I am looking forward to seeing more of your project and now have another reason to look forward to summer.

"Unguided" meaning you tracked this for 30 seconds manually? Man!

Oh yeah, you've got that telescope thingy huh. This is really cool. I've never met anyone who's taken pictures via a telescope.

What type and how big of a scope are you using? Where were you when you took the shot?

Good to see an upload from you at last Don. :o)
A specialist one at that .. Just think if we had to wait for the first light to reach us from Messier 51, & NGC5195 it will reach a dead planet that maybe regenerating under a new pattern !!
Far out. ;o)

It looks like a vortex. There is so much symbolism in these photos of the heavens, especially, I see now, in this slow exposure. Looks like what goes around, comes around. Nicely done, Don. Good to see you post.

Now that looks like a lot of agitator action. Nice picture, and my company will not use this in an ad without your permission. A PLUG: Whirlpool now owns Maytag.

Wow! The light that makes this picture was transmitted from it's point of origin in a time when the human race were still grunting and throwing sticks at each other. Evolution, it seems, cannot account for much change! haha!

It makes you wonder what's out there now. I guess we'll have to wait another 37 million years to find out. Providing we stayed in the same spot of course!

It's a really good photo, I can't wait to see what you capture in colour through your telescope in the future!

This has inspired me to make some space art. Really nice job on the photo!

Astonishing. I am not normally into B+W images but this has sentimental interest no doubt as it was taken by your very own equipment rather than acquired from NASA/ESA! Glad to have your commentary as well as occasionally contributing to : http://www.galaxyzoo.org shows how ignorant I am about probably the most important thing in the universe, the stuff beyond Earth! :)
