This little "weed" really surprised me. I let it grow the last two years because the leaves interested me. Suddenly, the other day, I noticed that it was in bloom.

If you know what it is, I'd sure like to know. It is growing in a shaded area under a red oak. I figure anything that blooms in the shade in the middle of winter is something special.

2008/02/12 Note:
A special thanks to JaLynn for her and her aunt for identifying this flower as a Japanese Camellia (Camellia Japonica).
This is, indeed, a special gift.

Well, one thing I know for sure and that is that it's NOT a weed. Is it a shrub? If it's growing in a shaded area it might be a shrub. I'm not sure what it is tho.I wonder if it's in the Rhododendron family? Such a strong and enduring little flower, such a precious colour and a very special plant indeed. THere must be a good reason that you've been given such a precious 'gift' my friend!! Verena

Excellent detail and clarity in your picture. I would never have guessed it was a weed. It just shows you that once again, He works in mysterious ways!

I think this might be a Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger). They are very special and bloom in the middle of winter, even in the snow. I have a photo of a white one in my gallery that groes in my garden. They come in many colours. You can google it and read more about it if you are interested. Wondeful shot!

I think it's a Japanese Camelia also. I was thinking it might be a Camelia, we had a lot of those in Louisiana. So that sounds pretty right..It's beautiful, and now you have a brand new flower to look forward to every year...Nice stuff!! Verena

Well, I can't tell you what happened other than maybe some stray seed ended up in your yard, but they are shade loving. That's why I planted one this year and also because they are very beautiful singly or in number. I'd love to see something blooming in the snow right about now.

I recognized it immediately as a Japonica Don- my mother had one in her garden - a hardy thing and always a beautiful sight in bloom.
Lovely detail and colour in this bloom :)
