Looking at the time ravaged remains of Fountains Abbey, I cannot help but wonder what this would look like today, if Henry VIII hadn't sent the monks packing.
Lovely capture Don. I love those Gothic arches and yes it would be interesting to know what this building would have been like had the monks stayed! Well done!

Yes it's true we British have many ruins, & the destruction of the monasteries is a fascinating subject.
I imagine the Tudors used their new hi tech iron cannons to smash some monastery walls but not always !! The lead roofs were first stripped, & over time the structures began to decay but often wealthy landowners used the sacred stones to build their own homes.
The Monks played an important role in the community providing food, shelter, & medical attention to the poor, & sick. After the reformation the Kings purse burst with revenue from all the newly acquired land. However there was also extreme poverty amongst the homeless who formed frightening gangs of scavengers !!
Good shot Don click here to see how the Tudors dealt with crime. :o(
