This is a picture of the western rampart of Chester's ancient Roman fort. Hadrian's wall continues westward for a few meters before it subducts into the adjacent meadow.
Hadrian's Wall was originally planned Circa. 121 AD without forts actually on its line, but by 130 AD, the decision was taken to add permanent garrison forts to its length. Chester's fort was built during this period under the Roman name of Cillurium. The fort is typical of the other sites situated along Hadrian's Wall.
