today was cloudy, cold and misty, but I still managed to pull this one off. I moved my dead tree branch closer to my open window. I then set my 70-200mm zoom to 1.2m instead of 3m. Camera set to P mode, ISO 400. More like this to come, Sunday should be a sunny day.

You pulled off a great one. You keep raising the bar for the rest of us. Super clarity and color on this. Nice bit of color on his head. Terrific job.

Awesome shot! So that's how you do it. I've often wondered how you manage to get such great closeups of birds without scaring them off.

Is this a woodpecker? That's quite a set up you've got going there, Gregg. I guess the birdies wouldn't take you up on your offer to come into the studio for their portraits, eh? Well, never mind because you've got them all figured out and we get to enjoy the fruits of your surreptitious labors. LOL He's a beauty, Gregg. You've outdone yourself!

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

"lets' ee,which part of the tree shall I peck at next?"...cute creature Gregg. Our downy woodpeckers are such fun to watch. Mine are not a bit afraid of me. They even fly toward me as I am filling the feeder or the suet. Friendly little feathered friend, they are! Nice job my friend ;=)

Fantastic shot. You even do great work, when the weather does not help you. I would like to have the address of his hairdresser - like the color mix.

I recently got a pic of a 2 downy woodpeckers, nothing quite so good, was a first time live occurrence for me ... the little critter surprised me, didn't have much time for ISO or zoom settings. But on a query side of things, one of them didn't have the red tuft, I'm guessing that's the female?
