I took this photo a few months back at Floriana, Malta. I did not use any tripods, there was not enough space and i had to move to see the other works.

Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

This is a unique photo...even though the fireworks itself is out of focus due to night shooting without a tripod, there is still interest generated by the silhouettes in the image viewing the blast.
Your difficult shooting turned out not too bad.
