Spotted this yellow tailed black cockatoo dining on a banksia cone in my back yard. These large birds are common in our area and are always a delight to observe. They have powerful beaks which they use to split banksia and pine cones and also use to strip the bark from trees to get at the grubs underneath.

That is one mighty good photo Frank. Great bird and your banksia looks very healthy..
I did not know cockatoos came in black.

I was just reading today that we actually have some of the Rosella ones here in NZ but I have never seen one, they are up north. Apparently they arrived in an illicit shipment back in the 30's and rather than risk being caught they were set free a little distance from shore. That was what it said anyway!!

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

All I have around here are drab looking crows and they are more interesting in the rubbish bins than anything natural.

A nice angle in the photo and a good capture of the cockatoo Frank. Nice details and colours in the photo.
