.... or Greg's Mill as we locals know it, as the founder was called Samuel Greg. The Georgian cotton mill sits on the River Bollin and the huge water wheel was driven by the fast flowing river, which in turn operated the spinning machines. The mill was run as a family business right up to 1959 and my grandmother worked there as a young girl. It is now a working museum and when I go on the tours I look closely at all the photographs to see if I can recognise her. :)

Beautiful building and great photograph. I bet it is nice a a museum. But from what I've read it must have been hard work in a noisy, dangerous environment for your grandmother.

I believe 'Where the heart is' was filmed in Huddersfield Bob! which is about 35 miles from here. Quarry Bank Mill is close to Manchester Airport and sits in a valley surrounded by woodland and parkland.

Speaking of Manchester, there are a lot of these types of buildings still standing along the river bank in Manchester, NH. There were lots of mill towns in this state in the 19th century, and they've been put to various uses over the years. Also the housing that the mills provided their workers now stand as apartments...all lined up and all brick. It would be interesting to be able to go into a mill or one of those apartments to see what kind of conditions and feel these once busy places have left behind. You're lucky this was turned into such a place. I'll bet you look for your grandmother in the pictures. It's one more fascinating aspect of our hobby :)
As to your composition, even though I find the content absorbing, the photo is a little dark, but framed, nonetheless in an interesting manner with the greenery at the top and down in the right-hand corner with the tall chimney lending its own charm to the overall view. :)PJ

I didn't realize this building was so large until I saw this photo Patti. I bet she was a grand lady in her day. It looks as though it is still going strong. So nice that they're using it instead of demolishing it as they do with some older buildings. Photographed very well.

I like the design of these old industrial buildings! They're not just a big square box like so many are now days. They actually have character & design to them. Nice job! That would be really neat if you found your Grandma in the pics.!

Wow! Three stories? That's a lot of touring and walking. The thumbnail appeared very dark but the download was great. You captured to brick of the building just fine. This was a difficult perspective to capture. Nice work.
