In the centre of Marrakech there are many beautiful gardens. I visited the Majorelle Gardens while I was there - it is like an oasis in a desert - beautiful flowers from all over the World and wonderful landscaping. The gardens were the work of Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) who moved to Marrakesh from France to work on his paintings. The vivid blue colour that covers the buildings and garden accessories was first used in the early 1930's and is known as Bleu Majorelle. The contrast of the blue against the green plants is really lovely. Following the death of Majorelle, the property was bought by Yves St Laurent. Majorelle's former painting studio now houses the Museum of Islamic Art within the landscaped gardens.
