Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Some words about my comments in general:
It is my believe that any comment should be honest and not out off politeness and therefor by definition complimentary, a comment should be fair and if necessary also with criticism or even destructive if this will help the maker (maybe) in making better pictures.
So any comment I'm asked to give will be, taking into account that a picture is taken by an amateur, still be honest. I am aware that my kind of comment will not leave me many friends.
So About this picture... "average". Seeing you're portfolio I saw more interesting images, so for me, "nice" duck, "average" picture.

Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?
I know this duck is real but it almost looks like a painted model duck as it is so bright. Good reflection as well.
