Caught this Great Blue Heron this afternoon at the pond out at Nature Preserve. It has been very cold last few days and as you can see the pond is frozen over with snow. This bird looks as if it is trying to keep warm and probably kicking himself for not heading south in Autumn!! This shot was taken with 70-300mm lens with focal length set at 90mm shutter speed is 1/2500 aperture was set at f/4 and ISO is 200

I have always been wondering what makes them herons look like retired professors.
Absent minded and intelligent and completely unpractical !!! LOL
Must be cold out there !
Poor sweetie.
Thanks, dear Gerry, and congratulations !!!

I like this shot a bit in the distance, too. The way you captured him between the reeds and with his feet dug in is wonderful!

very good shot and he does look like he is trying to stay warm. His wings are his warming blanket. Sandi

He is cold, and he is trying to pull his jacket up over his shoulders. This is a superb capture you got here Gerry.

He looks like he's wearing a bear skin to keep warm, but his toes are in the snow like he hasn't moved for awhile! What a great opportunity and a great capture!

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I like this shot , actually i prefer this shot because you can see his surroundings and he also looks quite funny huddled up, like hes got some cape or blanket round him but hes keeping guard, someone take him a cup of soup :-) grin, very nice work mr p!

I think it's brain is frozen. Boy, does that poor bird look cold. Why didn't you invite him in instead of pointing a camera at him? Sheesh!

Man, nice shot Gerry. Looks like the camera focused on the twigs in front, but it turned out alright nonetheless.

All plumped up and nowhere to go! I hope there's some open water nearby or he might starve as well as freeze:o/ Lovely shot Gerry, nicely placed in his [somewhat frozen] environment.
Cheers,
Steve.
