I have heard these Herons called by "Green Heron" and "Green-Backed Heron". They were hanging out at Creek at Nature Preserve this past Spring and Summer as water level was low and prey was easy for them. This picture shows a classic practice of them. Being that they have short legs and are one of smaller Herons they light on fallen tree limbs that are partly submerged. Then, using stealth, they gingerly go down branch to water and wait for unsuspecting prey. At right time there head strikes the water with there neck stretching maybe two feet into water and come up with a fish or frog or a crayfish...fascinating to watch...but have to anticipate to get picture of them catching prey.
