My nan told me not to bother with this flower as it had closed up for the night. But it was too pretty to pass up.

I think you caught it just in time! It's nice and bright against the darker background. The only suggestion I might have is if you could crop out some of the right side to let the bud stand out more. Other than that the focus and DOF is great.

The colors in here are very eye catching. If this is your Nan's garden, it is very lovely, indeed.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I think Mary (solita17) meant to say the left side. Morguefile used to advertise on Caedes but I haven't seen it in a while. It should just be morguefile.com. It's got some great stuff about composition and such.

You've got some nice color contrast going here but the hero of this story is right in the middle of things. If you cropped some off of the left side of the pic, not only would you have your subject offset, but the stem would give you a really nice diagonal. (I like the hot/cold contrast in this)
