O.K. Here goes. I checked out both images and each has features
that I like and dislike. While your first image has more detail
the color is washed out from the backlighting of a foggy or
overcast day. Your second attempt restored some of the color but
you lost detail with the darkness. I do like the second image better because it has a moody quality to it created by the silloquettes (darkened foreground).

That being said, you tried to capture an image in a broken
lighting situation, meaning your white sky created a lighting
situation that could not be fixed. I might have passed on the
shot all together. Cloudy, overcast days are great for shooting
anything that does not include the sky. They enhance color
because of the uniform lighting and lack of shadows, but as soon as you turn the camera up to include the sky all hell breaks lose. Your light meter can't accomodate the broad spectrum. If you open your apeture up to accomodate the foreground the background is burned. If you close the apeture
down to accomodate the bacground (or increase the shutter speed)
you lose your foreground. It is a no win situation and that is
why I might pass on it.

At any rate those are my thoughts. Cool subject matter, especially for the Fourth of July.
