taken at midnight in a local field, my first attempt at trying to see the galaxy in which we live. finding it impossible to focus on the stars with the stock 18-55 vr nikon lens that came with the camera.(no markings on focus ring) any suggestions/tips as to how i can focus on stars in the pitch black?.. 30 secs at iso1600 nikon d5100

Wow, looks good to me. I don't think you can focus on anything so far away, so you focus on all of it.

Nicely done. Focus should be simple. Try setting the lens to manual and turn the focus ring to infinity. If infinity does not look good enough try focusing on the moon or pick out one very bright star and focus on that. The focus on this shot looks great to me.
