This image was taken at Beijing, China, just outside one of the inner palaces of the Forbidden City. It is of one of a pair of bronze lion sculptures. Although no lions lived in China, they were adopted as a symbol of power and grandeur, and often adorn entries to palaces, official residences, businesses, and tombs. They are always in pairs, with a male and female lion. The male lion always has a ball under his front paw, while the female has a baby lion under her front paw. I especially appreciated the exquisite details, which I have not seen adorning any other such lions. Fit for an emperor I guess...

Great close up of this lion. It shows the wonderful patina on the bronze and the colours behind contrast beautifully with the lion. Thank you for explaining the tradition and placement too, it is very interesting! Look forward to seeing more of the same.

Wow. Excellent capture. I like this. What wonderful rich color and detail. Since you talked about what is under their paws, I wish you would have panned out to where I could see that. None the less, excellent capture.

Nice picture. I like the way that the lion is really sharp and the background suitable out of focus, keeping your attention where it should be.
