At the suggestion of Les, I'm putting an alternate version of my last upload up here. Any thoughts on this? Do the colors add to the sense of the age/wear, or does the subtraction of them give a greater feel of this?

Love this shot! The B&W makes it all the better to my eye. Great memory jogger shot.

very well done - I think the absence of the color is better.

The black and white gives it more of an old feeling.

"Do the colors add to the sense of the age/wear, or does the subtraction of them give a greater feel of this?"

Ok, since you asked ... ;o)

In my ever so humble opinion, I cast a vote for losing the original colours with a preference for this toned version.

Now then, when you have some creative time to spare ... got some stuff for you:

1) Gorman-Holbert Conversion Method.

"This black and white conversion method is named for Greg Gorman and Mac Holbert. It is also referred to as the Carr Method after its developer Rob Carr. It is a Luminosity Based method."

2) More on the above Gorman Method from a Flikr group.

3) "how to make your photos appear older"; tutorial from dslreports.com.

4) Free Textures from Mayang's Textures. In conjunction with the above tutorial.

5) Displacement Maps in CS Photoshop. A lil' something extra that can be employed, once again, with the above noted tutorial.

An aside: Might have been tempted to play around with the original image with some Curves Adjustment, focussing on the separate channels. Something about the blue-grey combo in the original doesn't come off as well to my eyes for some reason. Although, I do enjoy your original.

Annnnnd ... done.

... ...

Well, mostly done ... thanks for sharing your creativity with us and going that extra bit to illustrate a good example of subject matter and application of post processing techniques/methods. :o)
