the tillamook rock lighthouse sits on a basaltic knob. it is located about a mile off tillamook head. it was an important mark for sailors trying to enter the columbia river. it began service in 1881 (with its first order fresnel lens) and was decomissioned in 1957. it is now used as a columbarium. enjoy!

'Terrible Tilly' must be the nickname for that rock, given by seamen in the time there was no radar and other navigational aids. Thanks for this excellent image Jen. Saved and faved again!

That is the most interesting lighthouse. You have captured it perfectly. This is a very dramatic looking picture with all the action of the sea. I faved this one.

I too googled it and also gaga'd over it's beauty. I'm not sure that's a word but hopefully you got my point. What a final resting spot. You captured it perfecting. Just a gorgeous post Jen.

It certainly makes for a very interesting image, Jen. It looks like a hazardous ride to get out there, at least in this image it does. Nice composition and very interesting looking subject. Thanks for the background.

How in the world did they every build that place? It looks like just getting there would be a problem. Great shot. I love it.

Sorry I missed this when you put it up. That is a great shot and really conveys the ruggedness and loneliness of such an outpost. Apparently the columbarium business has not been well run and there have been some news stories and pictures that show the place poorly maintained and the interior messed up with rain damage and bird droppings, etc. Not the kind of final resting place I would want!
