we were driving along a quiet road after visiting balmoral castle and saw what appeared to be a rock tower. it just stands there, unfenced and beautiful in its solitude. here is some info about it:........................................................................................ "Knock Castle near Ballater in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland dates back to the 16th Century. Knock Castle was the Tower House home of the Gordons family. They fought with the neighbouring Forbes clan and at times it was a bloody feud which saw Henry Gordon killed in a raid by the Forbes and Clan Chattan. Knock Castle was then inherited by Alexander Gordon. Things came to a head when one of the Gordons sons secretly married a Forbes girl. The father of the bride had him killed and to prevent any repercussions he had his seven brothers killed as well whilst they were digging peat. They were then beheaded and their heads were spiked to their spades." nice, huh?

A beautiful capture... I would not have imagined all of this beheading going on in such a beautiful place.

Great pic and interesting -albeit horrific- narrative! One can hardly imagine the cruelty that hatred brings about. Alas, the Gordons and Forbes are not the only culprits: it's seen repeatedly in the history of all nations and all places of this global village.

Ouf, Scotland's bloody history, what a terrifying tale. This is a masterly shot though, beautiful perspective and the lines of the shadow really make it. Looks like it was quite an elegant place doesn't it, with the remains of the little turrets on the sides of the tower. I'm really enjoying this tour of Scotland Jen, looks like you had a wonderful time - and some good weather.

I believe they took the Hatfield-McCoy love fest to the next level. Great photo of the tower. Nice work Jen and I am still looking for the golf course.

The beauty of the castle and the image contrast sharply with the grisly tale of its history! What a great find and wonderful shot, Jen.

A stunningly beautiful shot of this wayward castle. Your shot has wonderful colour, clarity and perspective. The narrative is great and just shows how hard life was back then.

The perfect time of day to photograph this. The hard part is not catching your shadow in the shot - did you stand in the shadow of the tree?
